Brush Brush Brush Your Teeth

Who knew brushing our teeth could be so much fun? Today's inquiry was all about our teeth.

  • What are they made of?
  • What's inside them?
  • Why are they hard?
  • What do we use them for?
  • What does a hole mean?
Let the inquiry begin!

First things first, Preschool practiced brushing teeth using the big toothbrush and model teeth:
1) brush the outside of your top and bottom teeth
2) brush the inside of your top and bottom teeth
3) put your teeth together and brush up, down, and all around
4) don't forget to brush your tongue before rinsing out your mouth

Our inquiry brought us in many directions and Preschool was able to find answers to their many questions by: reading the book I Know why I Brush my Teeth, opening their mouths wide and looking at their friend's teeth, playing with the big tooth model and finally by brushing their own teeth.

To conclude our lesson, we started learning a new song! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Brush, Brush, Brush Your Teeth (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

Brush, brush, brush your teeth.
At least two times a day.
Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning,
Fighting tooth decay.
Floss, floss, floss your teeth.
Every single day.
Gently, gently, gently,gently,
Whisking Plaque away.

Open wide!
Practice makes perfect

Week Four: Short but busy, with no time to rest!

Only three days in the classroom this week, that's almost unbelievable as Preschool did so much!

Thank you for such a great week!

Unit of Inquiry

The week started off with us recalling the five food groups and sorting out various foods, working on understanding why it is so important to have a balanced diet.

Students attempted their first bake in Preschool and absolutely loved baking oatmeal cookies. They measured, mixed and even tasted. Their oatmeal cookies were delicious and a huge success! Well done!
All the ingredients

Carefully measuring

and mixing

How much is a teaspoon?

Making sure it's all mixed together

Spooning the cookies onto the tray

Fresh from the oven! YUMMMM

We started looking at the importance of brushing our teeth and were able to see the magic that a toothbrush and some toothpaste can do by brushing an egg that had been left to soak in coca cola. By brushing the egg with toothpaste, it became white again! After some reflecting Preschool, came to the conclusion that too much sugar is definitely not a healthy choice but by brushing our teeth we are helping our bodies be healthier.

Maths

In maths this week we continued to focus on our first Line of Inquiry, Daily habits and routines,  grasping the concept of organising and sequencing events in their correct order.

Line of Inquiry: Daily Habits and Routines

The students really enjoyed reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, where we discussed the Hungry Caterpillar's  food choices and decided that although he made healthy choices by eating lots of fruit, he didn't eat a very balanced diet! Using their knowledge on ordering and sequencing events, students were introduced to ordinal numbers and were able to order the Hungry Caterpillar's week in a fun game!

Learning about ordinal numbers:what did The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eat?

More practice on ordinal numbers was through sequencing brushing our teeth. It was interesting to see that different students had slightly different routines when it came to brushing their teeth.

Last but not least, we focussed on day time and night routines,  practicing through some sorting activities on the interactive whiteboard!

Reminders for next week

  • Next week is Culture Week, every morning from 8:45-9:00, a different presenter will give a short presentation about their home country. All parents are welcome, so if you have time please come!
  • Swimming will be taking place again as normal on Monday, so please remember to pack your child's swim kit.
  • On Monday, we will continue looking at dental health,  as part of the lesson, students will need their toothbrush and toothpaste, so please send that in with your child. Thank you.
  • For Show&Tell on Tuesday, I would like them to bring in something that tells us something about their favourite sport. We will be looking exercise and staying fit.
  • Next week, I will start sending home homework. Every Monday they will get a folder with the homework for the week, which I expect them to complete for that Friday. The homework is not meant to take them very long and by giving it to them at the start of the week, you can decide how to pace them. It will usually be a language related worksheet/activity and some maths to support our classroom learning that week.
  • They will begin bringing reading books home in the next couple of weeks but I will update you and inform you when that happens.
  • Next week in cooking we will be making our own pizza. On Tuesday they will make the dough and on Wednesday we will put the toppings and cook it. I will provide tomato sauce and cheese for toppings, if you want any additional toppings, please send them in with your child.
Thank you for all your support and have a great weekend!

All about Healthy Eating for a Balanced Lifestyle

Protein, grains, vegetables, fruits and dairy...dominated our Unit lessons this week, as Preschool got to grips with the five food groups.  Trying to sort different food into the correct category was tough but once these food groups came to life through our visit to the supermarket, it became much more doable! The trip to the supermarket was great and a good way to end our long Tuesday with the Preschoolers actively involved in trying to locate the five food groups (extremely efficient and successful). Our cooking lesson on Wednesday made excellent use of our supermarket trip and the students put together their balanced snack, composed of one food from each of the five groups.

Our yummy pita breads!

In maths we continued looking at routines with Show&Tell putting the students in the right mindset. They even felt confident enough to sit and present in front of the class! What a group of risk takers!

Show&Tell: Bedtime reading is the best!

Students have slowly started connecting that routines are important for a balanced lifestyle, which is great! More of that in the coming weeks as we look at our teeth and the importance of brushing our teeth after meals as well as sport and exercise.

Students continued focussing on counting during our numeracy lessons, making sense of what it means when a number becomes bigger or smaller. A lot of numbers filled the room as they were hopping and skipping up down the number line.

We had a lovely week and I wish you all a restful weekend.

Reminders for next week:

  • Just a quick reminder that Murmeli (the marmot) and a journal will start coming home with your child for the weekend. This will be done in rotations so that each student has the chance to bring her home and write in the journal. The students know what they need to do and are excited but I do ask for your help with the writing. They are also allowed to draw and it would be lovely if you could include some pictures to document their weekend with Murmeli. Thank you for your support.

  • Wednesday is Sports Day. Please remember to send in a change of clothes, put sunscreen and insect repellent on, in the morning.
  • As we have don't have normal classes on Wednesday, we will be cooking on Tuesday instead. So please send in a small container on Tuesday.

  • NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

  • Show&Tell on Tuesday: something that they did on the long weekend.
